Unleashing High-Powered Performances at the John Roethlisberger Iceberg Open

February 3, 2024

At the first 'home' meet of the season, MMG continued to bring the fire to the competition floor in the annual Iceberg Open run by Dale Bullivant and North Shore Gymnastics Association. The meet format is unique with three GymACT Teams doing battle alongside the event finalists for Level 9 & 10 gymnasts who competed the night before. 'I love this meet and the format Dale has created with the college teams competing right alongside the up and coming optional talent in this meet,' said head coach Mike Burns. 'It just lends itself to being a super high energy session with a whole lot of action going on all over the gym.'

Super high energy is no exaggeration as MMG got things rolling on the pommel horse with a great start to what would prove to be another high powered performance by Minnesota. The competition was stiff with 3rd ranked Washington making the trek from Seattle to Minneapolis to take on the red hot team from the Twin Cities. Also driving up from the cornfields of Iowa City was the 7th ranked Iowa GymACT team.

Pommel horse was a great start and off to the rings we went. At the end of our second competitor's ring routine (Dylan LeClair) the wooden ring cracked significantly and was deemed unsafe to continue competing on. Talk about a dilemma!! A solution needed to be found and meet officials went into Relentless Solution Focus Mode and found a solution - a second set of rings was brought over from Elite Gymnastics Academy (thanks to Ben Campbell, coach at EGA for getting the job done!) and attached to the ring tower and the competition was able to be finished with both Iowa and Minnesota still needing to compete on rings to make a full competition.

The disruption did nothing to disrupt the boys from Cooke Hall and they went out and knocked out a superb finish to keep their undefeated season alive!!
